A Trainer’s Honest Thoughts on GLP-1s for Weight Loss

If you’ve tuned into the health and wellness world at all lately, you’ve heard of GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro). Originally designed to manage Type 2 diabetes, these medications have completely shifted the conversation around chronic weight management.
As a personal trainer, I want to clear the air right out of the gate: I am not against these medications.
In fact, I think they can be an incredibly powerful tool for the right people. But just like any tool, depending on how you use it, can vary the effectiveness of the results.
What is a GLP-1?
GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1. It mimics a naturally occurring hormone in your body that does a few key things:
It slows down gastric emptying (meaning food stays in your stomach longer, keeping you physically full).
It helps regulate blood sugar levels.
It talks to your brain to signal satiety, effectively turning down the volume on constant food thoughts or "food noise."
It’s essentially a powerful appetite suppressant. But here is the vital distinction we have to make: Weight loss is not the same thing as fat loss.
The "Magic Pill" Trap
Using a GLP-1 solely for weight loss as a hands-off, effortless fix while ignoring your lifestyle, nutrition, habits, and exercise won’t fix everything.
Yes, if you take the medication and change nothing else, you will lose weight because you’ll be eating significantly less food. However, clinical studies are showing a troubling trend. When people lose weight rapidly on a GLP-1 without lifestyle interventions, a massive portion of that lost weight comes directly from lean muscle tissue, not just fat.
If you ignore your habits, a few things happen:
Skinny-Fat Reality: You shrink in size, but your overall body composition (your ratio of muscle to fat) doesn't actually improve.
Metabolic Slowdown: Muscle is your body's primary metabolic engine. Lose muscle, and your metabolism drops. Your daily maintenance calories go down too, so now you have to maintain your current bodyweight off of even less food than before.
The Rebound Effect: If or when you eventually stop taking the medication, you are left with less muscle mass than when you started. Because your metabolism is now slower, if your old eating habits return, you face a much worse rebound weight gain and the weight you put back on will likely be pure fat unless paired with adequate protein intake and resistance training.
The Best Way To Use A GLP-1
The medication manages the intense cravings and appetite, giving you the mental breathing room to actually build the habits that will sustain your health for life.
And the absolute highest priority on that list? Protein.
Because GLP-1s suppress your appetite so effectively, you won't feel like eating much of anything. It can be a genuine struggle to eat something as filling as a chicken breast, Greek yogurt, or a piece of steak when you have zero appetite. But skipping it is a recipe for muscle loss.
Think of it this way:
When you are in a steep calorie deficit, your body looks for energy. If you aren’t consuming enough protein and lifting weights to signal that you need your muscle, your body will literally consume its own muscle tissue for fuel. Another reason this happens is because muscle is a very calorically demanding tissue to have. The less muscle you have, the less calories your body needs to survive.
To lose fat and protect your metabolism, you have to prioritize:
Lean Protein First: Make protein the centerpiece of every small meal or snack you have. It acts as the building block to protect your lean mass.
Strength Training: You must give your body a reason to keep its muscle. Lifting weights tells your nervous system, "Hey, we are still using these muscles, don't break them down!"
Habits: Use this time to establish solid sleep routines, hydration habits, daily movement and a healthy relationship with whole foods.
Overall, for the right people, a GLP-1 can help open the door to a healthier life, but it won't walk through it for you. If you focus solely on the number on the scale dropping, you might be trading fat for valuable muscle. The medication can quiet the food noise, but let your nutrition and movement do the heavy lifting to build a strong, capable body that lasts.
