What Consistency Actually Looks Like

We've all been there. We start a new diet, vowing to never stray, or launch into a rigorous workout routine, determined to hit the gym every single day. But life happens.

This is where the pursuit of "perfection" often derails our health goals. We get discouraged by every missed workout, every indulgent meal, and end up feeling like failures. But what if we shifted our focus from perfection to consistency?

Consistency Not Perfection

Consistency isn't about being perfect; it's about showing up for yourself consistently. It's about making small, sustainable changes that you can maintain over the long term.

  • Think 80/20: Aim to eat nutrient dense foods 80% of the time. This allows for flexibility and prevents feelings of deprivation.

  • Move your body most days: Don't beat yourself up if you miss a workout. Instead, find ways to incorporate more movement into your daily routine. Try taking the stairs, go for a walk during your lunch break, or even use a walking pad at a standing desk.

  • Prioritize sleep and stress management: These are often overlooked, but they play a crucial role in your overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night and practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation or deep breathing. When you feel well rested, you're more likely to stick with your exercise routine and tend to crave less carbs and fats making it easier to stay consistent overall.

Embracing Imperfection

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. It's okay to have off days. It's okay to indulge in your favorite treats. The key is to acknowledge these moments without letting them derail your progress.

  • Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. Learn from them and move on.

  • Focus on progress, not perfection: Celebrate small victories, such as trying a new recipe or increasing your walking distance.

  • Find what works for you: There's no one-size-fits-all approach to health. Experiment with different foods and exercise routines to find what you enjoy and can sustain long-term.

Consistency is a marathon, not a sprint. It's about building healthy habits that you can maintain for life. So, ditch the pursuit of perfection and embrace the power of consistency. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
