What I Tell My Clients When They’re "Too Busy" to Train

When life gets busy, its easy for that 60-minute gym session you planned to feel like a distant fantasy. Usually, this is where the "All or Nothing" mindset kicks in. You think: "If I can’t do the full hour, what’s the point? I’ll just start again on Monday."
That mindset is the single biggest thief of your progress.
The Flaw in the "All or Nothing" Logic
When we skip a workout because we can't do it "perfectly," we aren't just losing 60 minutes of exercise. We are breaking a promise to ourselves. We are reinforcing the habit of quitting when things get messy. The reality? A 20-minute workout is infinitely more effective than the 60-minute workout that never happened.
Why the 20-Minute Win Matters
Even a short burst of movement provides massive benefits:
Metabolic Momentum: You’re still increasing blood flow, engaging your muscles, and regulating blood sugar.
Mental Clarity: 20 minutes of lifting or moving is often enough to break a stress cycle and reset your mood.
Identity Building: Every time you show up, even for 15 or 20 minutes, you are casting a vote for the person you want to become. You are a person who doesn't miss.
Perfection Isn’t the Goal
If you wait for the "perfect" time, the "perfect" energy levels, and the "perfect" schedule, you’ll be waiting forever. Start with being consistent first, then work on increasing your time from there.
Reframe Your Week
Next time you feel like blowing off a session because you’re short on time, try the "Minimum Effective Dose." What is the smallest amount of movement you can do to keep your streak alive? If you only have 5 minutes, 10 minutes or 20 minutes today, use them. Maybe that looks like doing some squats, some push-ups, and a plank.
It counts. It matters. And it keeps the momentum moving in the right direction.
